George Simon Kaufman
(1889 1961) Dramaturgo y periodista norteamericano, nacido en Pittsburgh y fallecido en Nueva York. Despues de trabajar como taquigrafo, agrimensor y viajante, obtuvo el puesto de columnista en el Washington Times (1912). Mas tarde colaboro en el New York Tribune y el Evening Mail; finalmente, pertenecio a la plantilla de redaccion teatral del New York Times.
Kaufman empezo su carrera dramatica con Someone in the House (1918). Aunque muy prolifico (desde 1920 escribio dos comedias al año por termino medio), solo produjo una obra ( The Butter and Egg Man , 1925) sin colaboracion alguna. Obtuvo un exito sorprendente no solo como autor dramatico, sino tambien como escritor de comedias musicales, y se especializo en la suave satira politica y en los temas de salon.
Gano el premio Pulitzer de teatro 1932 con Of Thee I Sing (en colaboracion con Morrie Ryskind y George Gershwin) y el de 1937 con You Can’t Take It with You (con Moss Hart). el y Hart recibieron tambien el premio Cooper MacGrue por Once in a Lifetime (1930). Kaufman colaboro tambien en Merton of the Movies (1922), The Royal Family (1927), Dinner at Eight (1932), I’d Rather be Right (1937), The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939), The Late George Apley (1944), Guys and Dolls (1950) y The Small Hours (1951).
